ABOUT US

Why Not Wood is based in a small village in rural Lincolnshire. Working out of our home workshop, our fantastic artisan woodturner Mathew has all the space he needs to design and make our handmade beautiful creations. Mathew's design cues are taken from the natural environment and can be witnessed in the smooth, gentle, curves and flowing profiles of each unique piece.

Obviously, wood is a natural material, so the colour and grain pattern of each piece is truly unique. The wood is carefully chosen for its properties and each piece is made to make the most of the wood figuring. We aim to use locally sourced timbers from sustainable sources where possible, but we also use a variety of exotic woods too.

When asked about his passion, Mathew states:

" I take pleasure in unlocking the incredible beauty of the wood itself, and I love how you can express yourself in ways that words just cannot. Nothing measures up to the excitement and discovery of turning away layers of wood and exposing the hidden treasures within the grain, texture and colour."

MEET THE ARTIST

MATHEW GARDNER

Mathew produces hand crafted pieces with a contemporary aesthetic using a heritage skill. He uses the gift of nature to unlock the magical beauty of wood blended with unusual materials. Being a self-taught woodturner, with no formal artistic education, allows him the freedom to design and create unique and extraordinary items, only limited by his own imagination. His inspiration can come from conversations, simple images or the wider world.
